Safety is Paramount

  • Is it safe to stay in the house?

  • Watch out for electrical hazards and the risk of slipping on wet surfaces.

  • Only engage in activities that you can perform safely.

  • Be cautious when handling wet items, as they can be surprisingly heavy.

Steps to Take After a Fire

  • Limit movement around the home to prevent embedding soot into carpets and upholstery.

  • Keep hands clean to avoid transferring soot onto furniture, walls, and woodwork.

  • Place clean towels or old sheets over high-traffic areas and on upholstered furniture.

  • If the power is out, empty the fridge and freezer, and leave the doors open.

  • Apply a light coat of oil or petroleum jelly to protect chrome fixtures.

  • Gently wash houseplants on both sides of the leaves.

  • Replace your HVAC filter to avoid circulating contaminated air.

  • Cover air vents with double layers of cheesecloth to catch soot particles.

What to Avoid After a Fire

  • Don’t wash walls, painted surfaces, or clean carpets and furniture without professional guidance.

  • Avoid cleaning electrical appliances that were near fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair technician.

  • Discard any canned or packaged food items stored near the fire, heat, or water.

  • Don’t use ceiling lights if the ceiling is wet, as wiring may be compromised.

  • Don’t send smoke-damaged clothing to a regular dry cleaner—improper cleaning could set the smoke odor permanently.
